CA Articleship is a three-year long mandatory practical training that moulds each Chartered Accountancy aspirant into an expert professional.
Every student joining for Articleship training is expected to have some pre-requisite knowledge in certain subjects and topics and a basic familiarity with certain specific soft skills.
This becomes important for you to get through the Articleship firm’s interview process and then survive through your Articleship years.
Knowledge Tested in Interviews: Before you go for an Articleship interview, you should have a clear answer for why you have chosen that particular firm to practice in. Firms would test your technical knowledge too. Questions related to accounts, company law, direct tax and service tax can be expected. It pays well to have some amount of knowledge in Microsoft Excel. Most firms do ask a few questions related to some functions in Excel.
Knowledge required based on the type of Articleship Firm you choose to join: This depends on the type and kind of firm you go on and select.
If your firm specializes in Audit, you should be clear with the Auditing Standards and audit procedures for different kinds of entities. And you obviously can’t audit unless you know the tax implications of the entity. You will have to gain some basic knowledge in direct tax matters and provisions related to tax deduction at source.
If your firm is concentrating on accounting, you should have good knowledge in accounts, accounting standards and disclosures. Familiarize yourself with popular accounting software applications like Tally.
If your firm specializes in consultancy or even Company related filings, basic knowledge in direct taxation matters and regarding important provisions of Company Law is a must. Be clear regarding the different company forms and attachments important for company filing.
Common Knowledge Required: Whatever the type or kind of firm you join in, you are expected to show a professional behavior and to act like a true professional.
Communication skills are very important to survive in a professional environment. Unless you can’t communicate the knowledge you have to another person, it becomes pointless. Be a confident speaker and make sure you are heard.
There is no bypassing the use of computers. Computers would be your greatest friend during your Articleship years. Learn MS Excel, Word and popular accounting software applications like Tally.
The fact is that nothing can be created out of thin air! If you are well prepared to face the CA Articleship, it does become more fruitful.
