Articleship is an important phase of your CA curriculum and it is almost as important a decision as choosing the college you would pick to graduate in.
However, just like how all colleges wouldn’t accept you into it, all CA firms are obviously not that easy to get into!
So, choosing the CA firm simply means selecting the best CA firm among the firms you could manage to get into. Here is the list of things to keep in mind while choosing your CA firm for Articleship Training.
Get a review from your Friends or Article assistants: The best way to know about a firm is to get a hands-on review from the articles doing their Articleship there. The opinions might be subjective, but it could give you a general idea about what to expect from the firm.
Consider the Availability of Work: If your firm has no work, there is not much chance for you get good exposure and the Articleship becomes meaningless. Get an idea about the number and kinds of audits the CA firm you intend to join has.
After clearing CA, are you intending to Practice or to go into Employment? This is one question you should have an answer for before you join Articleship and not after you clear your CA exams. If you are intending to practice, it is better to join medium sized firms. You would have to gain basic knowledge in vast areas and medium sized firms are the best choice for that. But, if you are intending to engage in employment, there is no harm in joining the big firms with specialized scopes. You would turn into an expert in certain specializations and that would be helpful in your career.
Travelling: If you have a passion for travelling or think you can adjust to any kind of circumstance anywhere, go for those firms with a good history of long-distance out audits.
Study Leave: It is better to avoid firms with strict leave policies. Considering that you would have to manage studies and work, it is better to join firms that could give you the flexibility in terms of study leaves. Small and medium sized firms would be better poised for this.
Bottom-line: Start looking for good firms as soon as you are done with your exams. Have a few names in mind even before the results are out. Research well and take an informed decision considering all the above factors.
